Abstract
Už není potřeba vyrábět další a další.
The site I am working on is located on Mlýnské nábřeží street and is located on the outskirts of Brno in Obřany. It is an artificially created island on the Svitava River, across which a massive transport bridge is built. The Essler factory is located on the island. A monumental reinforced concrete four-story building, surrounded by windows on all sides and a high tower, which was once built here for the purpose of textile industry production. During the boom of the textile sector, other single-story buildings were gradually added to it. I designed the project as such in connection with the Obřany community, but also global needs. Thanks to the functions I am proposing here, the sphere of artists, designers, graphic artists, etc. will move here... This will spontaneously create a center of independent culture. Currently, the main building is abandoned and decayed. Just like many other textile factories and not just textile, but in general brownfields in Brno. What to do with these buildings and areas? Do they have to wait for the developer to buy them, demolish them and then they will be gone for good? There was enough of textile production. We certainly do not need to produce more and more. Most of it is imported from abroad and this creates a lot of problems, such as the carbon footprint during logistics, cheap labor, or the creation of waste textiles. The average person produces up to 17 kg of textile waste per year. That is why I decided to do something about it. What happens to textiles when we throw them in a textile container or a black bin? Today, only 15% of textiles are recycled in the Czech Republic. This includes secondhand and upcycling. Other waste is either landfilled or goes straight to incineration plant, which creates other problems: the creation of emissions, greenhouse gases, etc. As of this year, the EU has introduced mandatory sorting of textile waste. This has created a new container for damaged textiles alongside paper and plastic. Unfortunately, they have not yet issued instructions on what to do with this sorted waste. That is why most countries burn it straight away. However, there are many alternative ways of recycling or transforming textile waste that can solve everything. That is why I decided to work with this waste textile in my proposal and symbolically return it back to where it was once produced in tons. Now textile waste will be collected here and, after sorting, it will be processed and repurposed into another product. This will happen within the educational center through various workshops and programs. My proposal can also be applied to other abandoned factories and is intended to serve as a manual on how life can return to empty textile factories or brownfields.
