Rhetorical Strategies Used by Information Technology Students in In-Class Presentations
(The International Academic Forum (IAFOR), 2023-05-31) Ellederová, Eva
Rhetoric plays an important role in helping information technology (IT) professionals communicate their ideas clearly and effectively. By employing rhetorical devices when speaking about technology topics, IT professionals can present logical and convincing arguments, and demonstrate their knowledge and expertise while engaging the audience and making complex technical concepts more accessible for non-experts. This study attempts to understand how IT students construct and develop persuasive arguments by analysing their use of rhetorical strategies in a sample of persuasive presentations delivered in the course “English for IT”. Both corpus analysis and manual analysis were used to identify different types of rhetorical strategies students employed to influence their audiences’ attitudes. The results show that IT students not only created a logical appeal which might be more natural for them but also employed a wide range of rhetorical strategies and devices to establish disciplinary credibility and create a more personal connection with their audience, thus maintaining an appropriate balance of logos, ethos and pathos. The study further recommends systematic and careful rhetorical analysis of ESP (English for specific purposes) students’ spoken language across disciplines and the consequent adaption of learning materials and teaching methods to improve ESP students’ rhetoric skills.

Tests as a Technique for an ESP Coursebook Evaluation
(Academics Education International Journals, 2022-01-03) Ellederová, Eva
Design-based research evolved near the beginning of the 21st century as a practical research methodology that could effectively bridge the gap between research and practice in formal education, as it aims at both developing theories about domain-specific learning and the means designed to support that learning. Since ESP teachers often design their own learning materials, this kind of research enables them not only to evaluate their quality and gradually improve them but also to produce design principles. Accordingly, the aim of my ESP coursebook design-based research is to evaluate the quality of a coursebook pilot version I developed for the students from the Faculty of Information Technology at Brno University of Technology in the Czech Republic, and consequently formulate necessary modifications based on design principles. I first frame the basic concept of design-based research and ESP testing. Then, I describe the methodology of the ESP coursebook evaluation. Results indicate the requirements for the coursebook redesign, which involve adding more tasks for the acquisition of linguistic means for expressing different language functions, including more material for recycling and reinforcement focused mainly on vocabulary practice and increasing the level of difficulty of listening passages. Based on these results, I discuss the ESP coursebook design principles related to multi-skill tasks, and professional vocabulary and language functions acquisition.

Digital testing during the pandemic crisis: University students’ opinions on computer-based tests
    (IERFP, 2021-01-01) Jašková, Jana
In 2020, the pandemic crisis caused by covid-19 led to some changes in global education. Consequently, primary and secondary schools as well as universities introduced distance learning in many countries all over the world. This situation mostly required, among other things, a new way of testing learners’ knowledge and skills. The objectives of this paper are to reveal university students’ opinions on computerbased tests in comparison with paper-and-pencil tests and to map their requirements concerning digital testing of English as a foreign language. The research sample includes 284 students of the Faculty of Business and Management, Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic. These students experienced online testing at home during the summer semester of 2019/20 as well as paper tests at school in the previous winter semester of the same academic year. Thereafter, they were asked to complete an anonymous online questionnaire. The results have shown that the learners were mostly satisfied with the introduction of online testing at home. However, if the electronic tests took place at school, not all of them would prefer this way of testing. Regarding tasks in digital tests, the learners gave priority to assignments based on multiple choice. Moreover, the respondents expressed their views on electronic devices and testing speaking skills on online platforms.

How many deaths? Auto-bio-graphy as death-writing
(Institute of World Literature, Slovak Academy od Sciences, 2024-04-08) Kotásek, Miroslav
The article concerns various aspects of autobiography as they have been introduced by Jacques Derrida, who himself used the term “autobiographical” to refer to his philosophical writing. Unlike most scholars who stress the link between autobiography and philosophy in Derrida’s writing the article attempts to link it primarily to the “literary”. In this endeavour, most attention is paid to the numerous metamorphoses in which “death” structures and haunts (auto)biographies and our thinking about the genre. Here, the greatest influence, apart from Derrida, was Maurice Blanchot. “Death” and negativity figure at many levels of autobiography, where, unlike in a fictional narrative, they cannot be suspended easily: they can be found in the question about the very usage of language and its relation to the autobiographer, in the construction of the “I”, and in the medial situation of the literary. The article concludes by suggesting a potential transformation of the autobiographical practice brought about by techno-cultural changes and developments regarding both the “archive” and “media”, which are transforming the status of memory, legacy, and the past.
