Abstract
Historic settlements are interspersed with a network of ways that has evolved over the centuries to meet the contemporary needs of the people. The ways that have contributed to changes in settlement structure and overall development are linked to each stage of settlement development. With the increasing intensification of transport, settlements have had to adapt to traffic. Then, as now, it was a natural transformation based on the demands of man on the settlement. We witnessed transformations in the past, when the way network shaped the character of settlements, as well as today. In the second half of the 20th century in particular, the character of settlements, which had been shaped over centuries, was in many cases irreversibly giving way to newly built roads. The theme deals with the changes that historic settlements have undergone through the development of the way network and the ever-increasing spatial demands until now. The article analyses not only the influence of transport on the structure of settlements and the surrounding landscape, but also the associated transport-related elements that have a visual impact in settlements. The aim of the paper is to familiarize with the problems faced by contemporary heritage conservation in settlements in the context of the demands placed on transport services and other associated problems. The purpose of the paper is to highlight the continuous increase in the demands placed on historic settlements for transport services, as well as to highlight the problems that arise when transport is suppressed. A settlement is a living organism in which a balance must be constantly sought, at all levels, including transport.
