Reorient

Abstract

Nejdůležitějším východiskem mé tvorby je arabská kultura a Libanon, odkud pochází polovina mé rodiny. V obrazech tematizuji hledání vlastní kulturní identity skrze vizuální jazyk. Orientace v nejistém terénu dvou odlišných společností, jazyků, náboženství a celkového vnímání světa přináší ambivalentní zkušenost, která se v obrazech manifestuje jako imaginativní prostředí, v němž se ornamentální tvarosloví transformuje v prvky krajiny, fragmenty lidského těla nebo architektury. Zajímá mě kultura arabského (levantského) regionu a islámské umění, především jeho abstraktní poloha a způsob vyjadřování. V sérii maleb aplikuji tuto imaginativní optiku jako způsob vidění a komponování obrazů, do kterých se promítají vizuální i haptické vjemy z mých vlastních vzpomínek, ale také niterní prožitky sdíleného vyprávění a generační paměti. V estetické rovině navazuji na rozlišné proudy malířství, jako jsou romantismus, abstraktní expresionismus a lyrická abstrakce. Kompozice funguje v určitém vizuálním rytmu a symetrii, která je odkazem k arabské poezii. Ta je specifická svou naléhavostí a intenzitou vyjadřovaných emocí. Hořko-sladkost a kontrast mezi láskou a bolestí jsou všudypřítomným DNA tohoto světa, do něhož se ve stejnou chvíli vracím a zároveň od něj utíkám. Název vychází ze slova „Orient“, což není pouze nezřetelná geografická definice, ale komplexní systém představ o intelektuální, kulturní, etické a politické esenci skupiny národů definovaný západní euro-americkou společností. Reorient znamená změnit směr nebo znovunalézat svoji polohu vůči okolí. Představuje změnu směru vnímání komplexního charakteru arabského regionu i své vlastní česko-arabské identity.The most important sources of inspiration for my work are Arabic culture and Lebanon, where half of my family is from. In my paintings, I am exploring the topic of searching for my own cultural identity through visual language. Orientation in an uncertain environment of two different societies, languages, religions, and complex perceptions of the world is an ambivalent experience that manifests itself in the paintings as an imaginative space, in which ornamental shapes transform into fragments of landscape, human body, or architecture. I am interested in the culture of the Arab (Levant) region and Islamic art, especially its abstract expression. In my painting series, I am applying this imaginative perception as a way of seeing and composing the paintings. I project both visual and haptic memories and experiences of shared storytelling and ancestral memory. In the aesthetic form, I am following different painting movements such as romanticism, abstract expressionism, or lyrical abstraction. The composition of the paintings works in a certain visual rhythm and symmetry, referring to Arabic poetry. The poetry is specific in its urgency and intensity of expressed emotions. The bittersweetness, a contrast between love and pain, is an omnipresent DNA of this world, to which I am returning and running away from at the same time. The title comes from the word “Orient”, which is not only an indistinct geographical definition, but also a complex system of ideas about the intellectual, cultural, ethical, and political essence of a group of nations defined by Western Euro-American society. Reorient means to change one’s focus or direction. It represents changing a perception of the complex character of both the Arab world and my own Czech-Arab identity.
