Abstract
Urbanism of settlements, in its fundamental essence, is not formed solely by matter but also by fluid in various states, whether in the form of space (air) or water. Water and water elements have always been an integral part of settlements. Settlements emerged around water sources, without which they would not have been viable. Water has numerous properties, and its applications in settlements are manifold. From a flowing river to still water in a vase on a table, it undoubtedly contributes to shaping the living environment. This paper focuses on water features that have long played a role in shaping public spaces in historic settlements. Water features were initially introduced into public spaces to meet the basic needs of inhabitants. Over time, as settlements developed, they became aesthetic elements with a positive impact on how residents and visitors perceived their surroundings. Some settlements, especially spa towns, were even established solely due to the beneficial effects of water. Today, most water features in settlements are perceived positively, and entirely new elements are emerging in squares, streets, and other public spaces. Water features connect us with history and extend far beyond more aesthetic or spatial functions. In the case of newer interventions, they enrich public spaces with new meaning, appearing in various forms, from fountains to misting installations. This paper briefly presents the development of water features in settlements, examining the impact of water on the perception of public space and human well-being. It also considers different forms of water and how contemporary heritage conservation approaches the return of historical or the introduction of new water elements. Water features are a significant phenomenon in settlements that should not be overlooked.
