Abstract
This paper deals with processing delay on edge devices (routers) in Radio Access Network (RAN) in the cellular systems with respect to the used operating system. Operating systems that allow virtualization and are designed for use in access networks are considered and compared i.e., Cisco IOS XE and the VyOS. Following the obtained simulation results from the GNS3 simulation tool, the right selection of the OS enables to achieve decreased processing delay in the given topology and communication scenario. Further, the findings obtained from the simulation scenarios indicate the need for more advanced simulations as the next-generation mobile networks i.e., Beyond 5G (B5G) are expected to handle data traffic with more demanding requirements on the Quality of Service (QoS).
