The Impact of Fortifications on the Formation and Development of Our Cities

Abstract

Založení naprosté většiny našich měst úzce souvisí s rozsahem a podobou jejich opevnění. Po několik staletí tak byly městské hradby určující silou v urbanismu a u mnoha měst je jejich vliv patrný a platný dodnes. Příspěvek shrne klíčové principy vývoje urbanistických struktur ve vztahu k městským fortifikacím a nastíní možná ponaučení z nich plynoucí, která by mohla být aplikovatelná i při současném plánování měst. Plošné omezení rozvoje měst hradbami v minulosti vedlo ke kvalitativnímu rozvoji zástavby uvnitř ohrazeného území. Důležitou roli zde hrála především privilegia podporující ekonomiku uvnitř hradeb, podobná opatření by tedy i dnes mohla být využita k rozvoji vybraných území současných měst.The founding of the vast majority of cities in the Czech Republic is closely related to the extent and form of their fortifications. For centuries, city walls were a determining force in urbanism, and in many cities their influence is still evident and valid today. This paper summarizes the key principles of the development of urban structures in relation to city fortifications and outlines possible lessons learned from them, which could be applied to current urban planning. The area-based constraint on city development in the past has led to qualitative development of the built-up within the walled area. An important role was played primarily by privileges that supported the economy within the walls. Perhaps such measures could be used for the development of selected areas within present-day cities as well.
