YARKINA, D. Komunikační technologie a mise New Horizons k Plutu [online]. Brno: Vysoké učení technické v Brně. Fakulta elektrotechniky a komunikačních technologií. 2016.
Communications Technology and the New Horizons Mission to Pluto Scope of Work The aim of Ms. Yarkina’s thesis is to describe the communications technology used in the New Horizons mission to Pluto, provide a brief description of the mission’s objectives and emphasize the ability to transmit signals over long distances. She also deals with the description and importance of the scientific equipment in the spacecraft, followed by information about date transmission and the navigation system of the planetary probe. The relevance and effectiveness of using the Ka frequency band and more modern technologies are also mentioned. Grammar The grammar, sentence structures and vocabulary are near excellent in this thesis. There are very few errors in the paper and no recurring errors to be found, including in the use of “articles” which is always a problem for even the best students in English. In addition, her paragraph division is apt, neither too long nor too short. Style This thesis is cleanly written in the sense that everything flows well from the beginning of the papers till its ending. A formal language without jargon is used in the text, the technology of the different systems in the Pluto missions is objectively described and the paper is understandable and cohesive throughout. Contents This was not an easy paper to write because New Horizons only made its closest approach to the Pluto system on 14 July 2015, so the information described by Ms. Yarkina in Chapter 6 was only recently made available during the writing of the thesis. This did not prevent her from giving a comprehensive treatment of the subject. There is a clear link between the aims given in the Introduction which is followed through from chapter to chapter till the Conclusion. Daria gives her opinion throughout with her best given, in my opinion, in Chapter 7.1 (where she compares the X-band and Ka-band) and in her final remarks in the Conclusion. Moreover, her use of images is clearly shown and is pertinent to the thesis. Finally, her references are cleanly presented so that the reader can easily find the work cited if he/she wishes to. Final Assessment Ms. Yarkina has written an excellent thesis. She accomplished everything and more that could be written on the topic. She worked very hard and deserves the final mark I am giving her, which is 96%/A/výborně
Ms. Yarkina´s bachelor’s thesis is dealing with communications technologies of a space probe New Horizons on her mission to the (dwarf) planet of Pluto. The thesis concerned is subdivided into the Introduction, the Conclusion and seven additional chapters. Apart from communications technologies and means of communication, Ms. Yarkina also describes the construction of the space probe, its onboard devices and their relevance, and most importantly also the results of the mission. The thesis is written in a popular-scientific style, with several chapters dealing with the antenna array, and RF communications being more technical. The used register is adequate to the purpose and style. Although occasionally highly technical, the thesis retains its readability. From grammatical point of view the thesis remains consistent, yet not flawless. However, occasional mistakes, which range from ill constructed passives, through word order, to incorrect articles, are not frequent in number, nor do they concentrate in one spot. Although they slightly diminish the overall score they are rather insignificant and do not have any dramatic impact on the meaning. All formal criteria demanded for a thesis have been met, all sources appear to be adequately quoted, easily identifiable and are consistent throughout the thesis. The author has proven she is able to search literature, analyze and synthetize information and present it in an academic piece of writing. In my opinion, Ms. Yarkina had to conduct a significant amount of research in order to write the thesis on this level. The long “List of References” seems to support this presumption. It is a well-structured piece of writing, written in confident, mature language; dealing competently with complex technical devices and yet still very interesting and enjoyable to read even for a non-technician. It is my belief that by conducting this thesis Ms. Yarkina not only fulfilled the criteria placed upon her, but went beyond them. Therefore, I hereby commend her thesis for defense in front of the state committee and propose the excellent (A, 90-point) grade.
