Abstract

The paper explores parallels and relations between cities – centres of thinking – which, in their time, used to set the trend, and where new lines of thought originated (not every large city was a centre of thinking; this depended on certain circumstances and social determinants). The timeline of the cities’ development is followed – from their beginning, through their rise and heyday, to their fall – in the global context. Is fall a necessary part? Is it definitive?
