Dissertation thesis written by Hillmar Heininger was focused on the interrogation of optical fiber sensors for civil engineering applications using widely tunable laser. The research topic was connected to the research project funded by the German Ministry of Research and Technology and conducted together with the partner company Bilfinger Berger, one of the largest civil engineering companies in Germany. In the frame of the project the use of an electrically tunable MG-Y-Laser for the interrogation of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) based fiber-optical sensing networks has been investigated. Outputs of the research have been published in the Radioengineering and Electrorevue journals and in the proceedings of international conferences SPIE Optics & Photonics, IEEE International Conference on Prognostics and Health Management, Mitwedia and Radioelektronika. Due to the need of many experiments and related realization of measuring workplaces the three prototypes were designed and realized (data-logger with Linux software support, high speed PRBS generator and experimentation system for modulated grating Y- Branch lasers). The number of the research output therefore can be regarded as sufficient. Hillmar Heininger’s attitude to research work during doctoral study was active and initiative. An original contribution of his thesis can be found in two directions: • Deep MG-Y-Laser characterization based on measurements of many parameters such as wavelength, optical power and number of spectral components as functions of tuning currents. • Development of the novel laser tuning strategies aimed at wavelength continuous control (direct and indirect control tuning models) providing means of self-calibration based on intrinsic laser properties. Outputs of Hilmar Heninger’s work are topical and useful for many applications, and his thesis is recommended to be defended.
