ŠKRABALOVÁ, L. Hemoglobin-mediated oxidation of marine liposomes [online]. Brno: Vysoké učení technické v Brně. Fakulta chemická. 2012.
The thesis consists of 115 pages with background, theory and results and discussion on hemoglobin-mediated oxidation of marine liposomes and effect of different antioxidants. The thesis is logically built up and the results provide a better understanding of hemoglobin induced oxidation and the effect of different antioxidants (astaxanthin, tocopherol, ascorbic palmitate etc). The amount of experimental work performed is impressive. The theory part is good. The results have been clearly presented and the mechanism of met-hemoglobin oxidation is discussed by using the data obtained in the studies and compared with the results of other research groups. This is done in a good way showing that the student has read and understood the literature in the field and also the relationship between her results and the results of other groups. However, even if the theory part is good, but perhaps a discussion of the polar paradox could have been included. The experimental part is described in detail, but the oxidation experiment could be described more clearly. As now it is difficult to follow how the oxidation rate was determined, as the determination of background is given in the chapter 3.4.2.1. The abbrevations used should have been explained in the tables - it should be possible to read these alone. In the results and discussion part the number of parallells should have been given in the tables. A more in depth discussion of why these results are different from the results of Carvajal, using the same system would have been good. It would have been nice to have some of the numbers in a table for easier comparison of the results with the different antioxidants. The conclusion could have had more numbers.

Thesis, writen by Skrabalova Lada, consists of 115 pages of results and discussion on hemoglobin-mediated oxidation of marine liposomes and effect of different antioxidants. Thesis has a logical structure; data given in the thesis provide better undestanding of hemoglobin induced oxidation and the effect of different antioxidants such as astaxanthin, tocoferol, ascorbic palmitate and others. The mechanism of met-hemoglobin oxidation is discussed by using the data obtained in the studies and compared with other research groups observations. This really shows that student tried to use the literature and the knowledge gained during the study. However, some small comments could be given: Theory part is really good and detailed, but short discussion about the methods usually used for quantification of oxidation could be given. Experimental part is described in details. However, oxidation experiment could be described morer clear. As now it is difficult to follow how the oxidation rate was determined, as the determination of background is given in the chapter 3.4.2.1 Reactants. In page 59, it is written that specific rate served for evaluation of effect of prooxidants and antioxidants, but in the results and discussion part the specific rate was not used. Results and discussion part is very clear, only sometimes there is no need to give two numbers after digit as for example yield of 0.96 % phospholipid of the cod roe. It is OK to give as 1 %. Some information such as Figure 29 and Figure 30 given in results and discussion part could be given in the experimental parts. 4.2.14 could be given in experimental part as hemoglobin description. Concluding: Skrabalova's thesis could be evaluated B.
