This thesis deals with a problem of time and energy-efficent train control that belongs to the area of dynamic optimization. The work follows a series of papers devoted to the energy-efficent train control, and studies this problem from a mixed viewpoint, where both the consumed energy as well as the time of a journey are the subjects of minimization. The topic itself required not only the apparatus of optimal control theory, but it covered also some other optimization disciplines (like nonlinear programming). The mathematical side of the work consisted in a modification of existing procedures, but this modification was nontrival in the sense that it required a deep knowledge of the problem's nature. In addition, this theoretical part was supported by a lot of additional tedious calculations (analytical as well as numerical). I would like to appreciate the author's approach to preparation of this thesis. In particular, his activity, effort, responsibility and interest in the studied topic. In fact, during the third week of the fall term, the author himself contacted me with the request for a diploma topic from the area of optimal control theory. Since that time, he regularly consulted his ideas, procedures and computations connected with preparation of this thesis. Despite of several objective inconveniences, he was able to write a work satisfying my demands and expectations on its content and form (up to some language and other formal imperfections). For the above reasons, I recommend this thesis to the final defence. Taking into account all the above stated facts, I suggest the classification degree B.

The thesis deals with energy-efficient control of an electric train. First, the author presents a survey of basic mathematical models used in energy-efficient train control and then introduces Pontryagin's Maximum Principle (PMP). The theoretical part of the thesis is concluded by application of PMP to minimum-time problem and minimum-time-energy problem. Final chapters 5 and 6 are devoted to numerical experiments using optimization software GAMS and to conclusions. The main goals of the thesis were achieved. The author showed the ability to work with literature, but sometimes struggles to maintain continuity and to avoid skipping logical steps. Although the author took an ambitious task to concentrate a lot of facts in only a few pages, the thesis could be more self-contained so that the reader does not need to find relevant connections in other literature. Also, in some moments, it is not clear whether the results are already known, or the author derives original conclusions. The thesis contains a significant number of errors that may have been prevented with a more careful reading (e.g. mixing tenses, typography). Besides numerous grammar errors, there are often typograhical errors as well as typos. I recommend the work for the defense with the grade C.
