The application of drones is becoming increasingly frequent in many areas of engineering, and their utilization for aerosol measurement is a logical extension of this trend. Mr. Htet Aung Latt successfully reviewed, studied, and analyzed the relevant scientific literature on the topic of drone utilization for aerosol measurements. Following his literature review, he conducted a market study to select suitable and compatible components for a drone-based aerosol measurement system. Although he had limited prior experience with this type of technology, he successfully programmed and assembled all parts into a functional measuring instrument that met all project requirements. It is worth noting that a significant constraint was the need for the lowest possible cost. Despite this limitation, the system was successfully tested, and several measurements were performed and evaluated. Throughout the project, Mr. Htet Aung Latt worked systematically and independently, requiring minimal guidance. He demonstrated a strong capability for solving engineering tasks, including the assembly of a measuring device and the evaluation of its results. An area for possible improvement would be a more in-depth evaluation of measurement uncertainties, accompanied by a more thorough discussion of the results. However, in general, Mr. Htet Aung Latt made excellent progress. The work is of a high standard, and I recommend a final grade of B.

The bachelor’s thesis deals with a relevant topic: monitoring air pollution using low-cost sensor-equipped drones, focusing primarily on PM2.5 and PM10 particles. The structure of the thesis is clear, and the main objectives are met. The author reviews sensor types, outlines different approaches to pollution detection, and performs both laboratory and outdoor tests. Finally, the author presents the acquired data and discusses the results. The experimental section, in particular, reflects a good understanding of the challenges involved in using drones for environmental monitoring. In the Methods section, the student thoroughly describes the integration of a low-cost sensor into the drone, including attaching Python code used to collect data from the sensor. The author also created a live monitoring website that is available when the UAV is within WiFi range and where data can be stored. I also appreciate the validation of the low-cost sensor against laboratory equipment: the aerodynamic particle sizer TSI APS and the particle counter Trotec PC220, both under controlled conditions. The thesis deals only with UAVs, referred to throughout as drones. It could have been beneficial to at least mention or briefly review other types of drones (not UAVs) suitable for this application. The outdoor tests are relatively simple but serve their purpose. Variables like wind and rotor interference are acknowledged but not controlled or quantified. The student performed two outdoor measurements, the first serving as a functionality test. Outdoor temperature was monitored during this experiment. In the second measurement, however, temperature data was sourced from Apple’s weather forecast app, which is known to be imprecise. The written text has several weaknesses. The literature review is mostly descriptive and lacks critical insight. The student uses the (Author, year) citation style, which is appropriate, but it is often applied incorrectly. Measurement results are presented, but their interpretation is shallow. The data presentation is also insufficient, as there is no statistical analysis included. Furthermore, data from a single condition is plotted as a time series, even though the measurement setup is essentially steady-state in nature; in such a case, it would be more appropriate to present averaged values with error bars. The earlier validation of the sensor could also have been reflected in the interpretation of the final results. The language is another area that could be improved. There are grammatical issues, awkward phrasing, and inconsistent terminology throughout. Phrases like “this paper” appear frequently, even though this is a thesis. The general sections, especially early in the work, often read more like generic summaries.. Overall, the author did a good job designing and conducting experiments, both in the laboratory and outdoors. The thesis suffers somewhat in its written form and would benefit from a more personal and analytical approach, as well as greater attention to scientific presentation. Nevertheless, the work meets the requirements for a bachelor’s thesis, and I recommend it for defense with a grade of C.
