The Master´s thesis of Jan Rajm deals with the multi-modal transfer matrix method and its assessment for determination of the effective electromagnetic parameters of periodic structures ranging from 1D, 2D to 3D structures. He implemented the method in MATLAB environment which is suitable for dealing with large matrices and was made available online in GitHub repository. The thesis is structured logically, beginning with periodic structures, describing the unit cells arrangements and detailing the issue of supercells analysis. The numerical computation based on search of characteristic equation roots and linearized variation of the method were discussed. The method was then evaluated on the examples of 1D (filter structure), 2D (dielectric unit cell) and 3D (metallic unit cell) structures, including the obtained effective electromagnetic parameters that were compared either to the results obtained from CST Studio Suite or reference values from literature with very good agreement, proving the functionality of the method. Further, the method was enhanced for the analysis of supercells based on the hexagonal arrangement and several methods of filtering anomalous solutions were proposed. However, an extended variety of periodic arrangements could be studied. The application of this method was demonstrated on the design of Luneburg lens antenna made of hexagonal unit cells in parallel-plate waveguide configuration. The lens was 3D printed, but due to mechanical mismatch during initial measurement and its time constraint, the measured results in the thesis are missing. Therefore, the design was evaluated in another simulation software Ansys HFSS, resulting in nearly equivalent results. I appreciate the student’s work during the whole time along with that the thesis was written in English with minimal spelling errors. The objectives of the thesis were met, and I support it with an overall score of 94 points (A).
