The thesis is focused on the area of privacy-enhancing technologies. It concerns design of cryptologic protocols and their implementation on constrained devices, such as smart-cards and mobile phones. The thesis is composed of results published in journals and conference proceedings. The main objectives of the thesis, i.e. the delivery of novel cryptographic protocols and their efficient implementation, are generally achieved. Student presents advanced cryptographic design and implementation results obtained on various types of platforms. Theoretical design of cryptographic protocols is described particularly for attribute-based credentials, where student contributed as a member of our AXE group. In some sections, it is difficult to distinguish concrete contribution of the student and of the rest of the group. However, it is clear that most parts, especially related to positioning, contain student’s novel contribution and original work. The results in the form of software are practical and verified in practice. In particular, the advanced optimization techniques and methods for modular arithmetic acceleration on smart-cards are very interesting and important for the deployment of modern PETs. Since all results are already published in renowned venues (though not the top ones like CRYPTO, CCS or S&P), I consider the scientific contribution adequate for a PhD student. During the studies, the author was active, participating also in education and awareness activities. The layout and formal aspects of the thesis are without any major errors. The readability is very good, as well as the formatting of the thesis. Overall I consider the thesis of Raul Casanova Marques of very good quality and recommend it for defense.
