Tomáš Vičar's PhD thesis is focused on the analysis of images and image sequences from light microscopy. The thesis is a collection of 7 scientific publications - 4 journal articles, 2 conference papers and one book chapter. These main part is preceded by an Introduction and a Summary explaining the contribution of Tomáš's work. The work deals with the main topics of cell image processing and analysis - segmentation, tracking and classification. The main part of Tomas's work was connected with a project supported by Czech science foundation, where he made a significant contribution with his activity, innovative approach and ability to take a new look at the problems he solved. His work associated with this project has already attracted the attention of the scientific community (he currently has more than 150 citations of his work on Web of Science). Tomáš has been working on this topic since the beginning of his PhD studies, i.e. since 2016. From the very beginning, he has been very actively involved in research and has contributed significantly to strengthening the cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine of MU. Tomáš has also been actively involved in other projects here at our institute and also at the Institute of Pathological Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, MU. During his studies he completed an internship at the Center for Systems Biology Dresden, MPI of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, where he was involved in the analysis of pathological microscopic images. Tomáš also supervised several bachelor and diploma theses and contributed significantly to a new course named Machine Learning, where he prepared a substantial part of the computer exercises. On the basis of the submitted work I can conclude that Tomas fulfilled the objectives set in the thesis and achieved excellent results, which he published in well-established journals and at scientific conferences. He approached the topic in a very creative way - he participated in the design of experiments, data collection, design of methodology and evaluation. Tomáš has demonstrated the ability to combine a number of approaches in machine learning, image, signal and data processing in an appropriate and effective way. Thus, this doctoral thesis meets the requirements expected for the awarding of a doctoral degree
